Why Fall is the Best Time to Treat Your Spider Veins

Did you know that autumn is the best time to prepare for wearing shorts for next year?

You may be thinking “shorts already?” But believe it or not, the clock is already ticking on taking those shorts back out next year. Summer will be here again before you know it. Here’s why autumn is the best time to treat your spider veins with sclerotherapy:

It takes some time to see the full effects after sclerotherapy

This minimally invasive office procedure performed by a highly qualified vein doctor is used successfully to eliminate spider veins. While the procedure is effective, it can take 3-6 months after the treatment for the body to fully reabsorb the diseased veins and reveal beautiful, vein-free legs. From fall to summer there is a good amount of time to see the full effects of sclerotherapy.

Sclerotherapy can cause temporary bruising

Symptoms such as short-term swelling, bruising, and skin discoloration are normal after sclerotherapy. Since there is little to no downtime after the procedure, patients are often more comfortable wearing clothes that hide their legs while they get on with their everyday activities after treatment for spider veins. The fall season and cooler weather in general is already a time to wear longer pants and layers so your bruises will be covered.

Pressure promotes healing after sclerotherapy

After the sclerotherapy procedure, an ace wrap is applied immediately to help prevent swelling and bruising and promote healing. After one day, patients are then encouraged to wear compression socks for at least two weeks. These snug and cozy undergarments are most comfortable during cooler months and are easily covered under long pants.

Cooler weather is healing weather

While it is perfectly safe to have sclerotherapy during the summer, it is recommended that patients avoid sun exposure for at least a couple of weeks after the procedure. Direct sun exposure for the first month after sclerotherapy can cause skin darkening in the treated areas, especially for those with dark skin. It is more comfortable and easier to keep healing skin hidden under long clothing during cooler fall temperatures.

The summer heat can also dilate veins, making itching, cramping, and swelling worse. Engaging the leg muscles in the form of exercise after surgery is vital for healing after sclerotherapy. Outdoor activities such as walking and biking are much more pleasant in the crisp, cool fall air than the hot summer.

The end-of-year holiday season can be hectic. Now is a great time to treat yourself to healthy legs. The slower pace of the post-summer/pre-winter holiday period is the perfect time to get your legs in the shape you’ve been longing for. By treating your spider veins now, you’ll avoid the holiday rush and will have all the time needed to look and feel your best when shorts season arrives again next year!
