Happy New Year from all of us at Elmore Medical!

It’s that time of year when everyone is busily making their list of New Year’s resolutions, committing to making the next 12 months better, healthier and happier than the last. But did you know that 4 of the most common New Year’s resolutions can actually do wonders for your vein health?

No matter how well-intentioned we are, it’s sometimes difficult to maintain our New Year’s resolutions. One thing leads to another and suddenly the simple becomes complicated. But here are 4 resolutions to stick with to help keep your legs feeling strong and healthy.

  1. Resolve to reach and maintain a healthy weight: This helps you avoid putting too much pressure on your legs. Not only does that help avoid spider and varicose veins, but it also will help keep your knees strong.

  2. Resolve to exercise daily: Choose exercises or activities that strengthen your legs and veins and improve circulation. Walking, dancing and swimming are great choices, especially if you’d rather skip the gym.

  3. Resolve to eat better: What we eat has a direct effect on our veins. Eating the right foods can control the unsightly and uncomfortable swelling that often accompanies varicose veins. Here’s a great list of foods to eat (and those to avoid) for better vein health.

  4. Resolve to quit smoking: Smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke affects veins, arteries and the entire circulatory system. It can make venous symptoms, like leg aches and pains, even worse.

Varicose veins, and vein disease, are a medical condition, not just a cosmetic issue, that will get worse over time.

You may have noticed the early signs of varicose veins years ago. Maybe they weren’t troubling enough to do anything about at the time. But over time, those symptoms will continue to worsen. Waiting to seek treatment if your legs ache, or a vein in your leg is ropy and discolored, could make matters worse.

And if the small patch of spidery red veins on your leg is growing, putting off treatment won’t help it go away.

If either of these scenarios sound familiar, here’s one New Year’s resolution you can easily keep: give Elmore Medical a call.
