DIY Varicose Vein Remedies

a DIY home remedy set up

In the age of the internet, home remedies seem to be all the rage. While there are some great DIY solutions for a variety of common issues and ailments, the internet is also a breeding ground for wildly unproven home remedies that range from ineffective to downright dangerous.

Varicose veins are unsightly, large, twisting, and bumpy veins that typically show up just under the surface of the skin in the legs. But can you get rid of varicose veins naturally? Unfortunately, there are no scientific studies that confirm any home remedies for varicose veins will help prevent or improve them.

Here are a few of the most common claims:

Essential Oils (various kinds) massaged into the skin.

Will it work? – No.

Garlic oil applied as a topical compress 3 times a day.

Will it work? – No.

Cabbage Leaf applied as a compress on the area of the diseased vein.

The Claim – “Put a fresh cabbage leaf on the varicose veins and let it stay for an hour. Do this 3 times a day until the varicose veins disappear completely.” “…effective treatments that can help you get rid of varicose veins naturally.”

Will it work? – No.

Apple Cider Vinegar taken orally or topically.

The Claim – “In the case of varicose veins apple cider vinegar helps as it: eliminates edema (swelling), boosts blood vessels, it tones the skin on the feet, it promotes blood circulation and enhances functioning of circulatory system.”

Will it work? – No.

Green or Ripe Tomatoes applied as a compress.

Will it work? – No.

Why They Won’t Work

Many of these home remedies may help to reduce swelling and pain to a small degree but do not treat or resolve the underlying cause, similar to applying ice to a swollen, painful area. These kinds of nonsense-treatments can delay people from seeking the medical attention they need, which can lead to serious complications.
