Varicose veins are often the source of misunderstanding and misinformation. There are many myths and misconceptions about varicose veins that continue to circulate, even though they have been debunked by medical professionals. In order to clear up some of the confusion, this article will explore some of the most common myths about varicose veins.

What are varicose veins and where do they come from?

The main cause of varicose veins is faulty valves in the veins. These valves are responsible for controlling the flow of blood as it moves up and down your leg. If the valves become weak or damaged, blood can pool in your leg, and cause the veins to become “varicose”, that is, enlarged and twisted. At the same time, the pooling of blood

can also cause a variety of other symptoms in your legs, including pain, calf

aches and heaviness, swelling, and itching.

Some factors that can contribute to varicose veins include:

  • Genetics – if there is a family history of vein disease you may have a higher risk of developing vein problems

  • Age - the older you are, the more likely you are to get varicose veins due to the general weakening of the veins over time

  • Pregnancy - hormones and weight gain are two major components of pregnancy that lead to varicose veins forming

  • Obesity - being overweight adds extra pressure to the veins in your body making it harder for the blood to flow properly

  • Sedentary lifestyle - staying in one position or space for a long period of time can lead to a pooling of the blood and hinder your body's natural blood flow

Most common varicose vein myths

1. Varicose veins come from crossing your legs.

This is a tale that goes back generations. The notion that crossing your legs reduces blood flow and 'pinches' veins may appear sensible, but it's incorrect. Feel free to cross your legs as much as you like. However, sitting in one position for too long can definitely lead to varicose veins so stand up and move around after sitting for a while (legs crossed or not).

2. Young people can't get varicose veins.

While we are more likely to develop varicose veins as we age, that doesn't mean we can't get them when we are younger. In fact, vein diseases can appear as early as your 20s, depending on your personal risk factors. For example, if your parents or grandparents have varicose veins, there's a good chance you will as well, and your odds of developing varicose veins early in life may also be increased by your family history.

3. Only women get varicose veins.

Nearly 50% of men will develop some type of venous insufficiency by the age of 60. The reason this myth exists is most likely because men are less inclined to have varicose veins treated. By not having their varicose veins looked at and treated, they are at risk for more severe vein problems down the line.

4. Treatment for varicose veins costs an arm and a leg.

In fact, most cases are covered by insurance. This is because the majority of individuals with varicose veins have underlying venous problems that could lead to serious medical issues without treatment. In addition, the new state-of-the-art in-office vein treatments are more cost-effective than the invasive vein surgeries of years past, helping lower the overall cost of vein treatments.

5. Wait until after giving birth to seek treatment advice from a vein specialist.

While it's true that pregnancy frequently causes varicose veins to get worse, many physicians and vein specialists recommend seeing a doctor as soon as symptoms appear. The sooner you treat varicose veins, the better your chances of success.

6. Varicose veins are purely cosmetic.

If left untreated, varicose veins can often lead to serious serious health conditions, including, severe swelling, bleeding from a ruptured varicose vein, skin discoloration and open sores that take months or even years to heal. To prevent these and other serious medical problems, it is important to see a vein specialist as soon as you think you have varicose veins.

From old stories passed down through generations to the increased nature of misinformation spreading over the internet and social media, it can be hard to know what is true or false about varicose veins. The idea of treatment might be scary for many people, and this misinformation could make them hesitate to seek treatment. However, there are many solutions and simple treatment options available today. Many of these myths and general varicose veins concerns can be cleared up by simply visiting a vein specialist. They are trained and knowledgeable, so they can take care of any issues and scary ideas you may come in with. Don’t let these myths keep you from getting the help you need.
