5 Questions Your Vein Specialist Will Ask You

In our last post, we discussed 5 questions you should ask your vein specialist. Now, let’s turn the tables. While you have questions for your doctor, your doctor also has questions for you.

Whether or not you currently have varicose veins symptoms, having an evaluation of your veins can be a good step for anyone with concerns about their blood flow and visible veins.

Here are 5 common questions your vein specialist will ask in your initial consultation:

1. Do you have a family history of vein disease?

Though not always, varicose veins, spider veins, and other venous issues typically run in families. Your doctor will want to know this information right out of the gate.

2. Do you feel any pain, heaviness, or cramping in your legs?

These uncomfortable sensations are a common symptom of varicose veins. They are a sign that your veins are working overtime due to their damaged state.

3. Have you noticed a change in the texture or color of the skin near your varicose veins?

Skin changes are often a sign of vein disease and usually mean that they are getting worse. Often times, experiencing these symptoms means that treatment needs to happen sooner rather than later.

4. Have you tried dealing with your vein problems on your own or under the care of another physician? If so, what have you tried?

There are many lifestyle changes that you can make to relieve varicose vein symptoms. These include weight management, making dietary changes and being more active.

In addition, your vein specialist will want to know if you have tried using compression stockings. Most insurance plans require that a patient has tried using compression stockings for a period of time before they will authorize a treatment procedure.

5. Are you able and willing to follow post-procedure instructions?

While most procedures require little downtime, there are still post-treatment instructions that need to be followed to ensure success and prevent complications. Your doctor will discuss what is required post-treatment in your consultation and be sure that your lifestyle allows for you to follow the necessary recovery and follow-up instructions.

There is a significant amount of information sharing that occurs during your initial consultation with a vein specialist. You will have questions for the doctor, and they will have questions for you. Knowing what to expect can make the consultation more comfortable, quicker, and more successful.
