How to Celebrate a Vein-Healthy Holiday

The holiday season is a time for family, traditions, and a little well-deserved time off from work. They also tend to be a time spent doing a lot of sitting, dressing up in uncomfortable high heels or tight clothing, stressing about making sure everything is just right, and eating rich and salty foods.

For those suffering from varicose veins, it’s our legs that will carry the burden of all this increased stress on our bodies. Here are some tips for celebrating a vein-healthy holiday season.

1. Moderation is key

Try to maintain a healthy diet and stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, and eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Studies show that foods rich in bioflavonoids (such as spinach, bell peppers & broccoli) help strengthen vein walls. Avoid salty treats, as it predisposes us to swell.

The average weight gain during the holiday season is a little over one pound, but a study found that those who are already overweight gained at least five pounds during the holidays.

And, being overweight is one of the leading causes of vein problems. So, rather than put more stress on your already-stressed veins, decide ahead of time to stick to a healthy diet as much as possible.

2. Squeeze in some time for exercise

We know time is precious during the holidays and having to choose between going to the gym or going to that holiday party is a pretty easy choice. But sticking to your exercise routine is crucial this time of year. Incorporating some time to get moving will help to keep your veins healthy.

That doesn’t mean you have to forgo that holiday party to spend an hour on the elliptical. Make it fun! Here are some easy ways to add more movement to your daily routine.

3. Travel smart

Traveling during this time of the year is already stressful. You’re guaranteed to run into crowds at the airport, traffic on the roads, and all kinds of other inconveniences during your holiday travels.

But for those with vein problems, it can be even more problematic. Sitting for long periods of time can cause a whole lot of swelling, and possibly even blood clots. Remember to get up, stretch, and walk around at least once every hour.

Here are some more tips on preventing blood clots.

Extra Tip: For Retail Workers

As shoppers begin to flood the stores in search of that perfect gift or the ingredients for their Christmas dinners, retail workers will be experiencing longer hours and busier work days. Remember to take care of your vein health, while taking care of the customer. Here are a few tips just for you:

  • Stay hydrated and mobile when working long hours. Standing in one place for too long can lead to leg swelling and water helps keep your circulation on track.

  • Wear comfortable shoes and even compression stockings to take some pressure off the veins in your feet and ankles.

  • Stretch and elevate your legs whenever possible. This can also help take some pressure off your hard-working legs and alleviate varicose vein symptoms.

Remember to think of yourself this holiday season. Your good health is one of the best gifts you can give your family.
