June is Men’s Health Month - a time for men to consider the health issues they face on a regular basis. Varicose veins are one such health issue.

The myth that only women develop varicose veins has long been busted. Varicose veins may be more common in women, but men can develop them too. In fact, about 56 percent of men develop varicose veins in the lower extremities.

And varicose veins are not just a cosmetic concern—they can lead to discoloration, bleeding, skin ulcers, and a “heavy leg” sensation that may inhibit daily activities. Without seeking treatment, men place themselves at risk for developing much more serious conditions, including chronic venous insufficiency and superficial venous reflux disease.

What Causes Varicose Veins in Men?

The number one cause of varicose veins in both men and women is family history. If your mom or grandmother had varicose veins, you are more likely to have them.

Aside from genetics, lifestyle and age may also play a role in the occurrence of varicose veins. Those who have a sedentary lifestyle or whose jobs require prolonged sitting or standing are at risk as these can cause the blood to start pooling.

Varicose veins can affect men of all ages but the risk increases with age because of the loss of tissue tone and muscle mass, as well as a weakening of the venous walls.

What Can Men Do to Prevent Varicose Veins?

Making some simple healthy lifestyle changes can often be the most effective approach to prevent mild forms of venous disease from forming or progressing.

  • Manage your weight and blood pressure: Maintaining a healthy weight helps promote good circulation. Being overweight can negatively affect your circulation and increase your blood pressure.

  • Exercise: This is the easiest way to maintain healthy venous structure and keep your vein walls strong. It’s important to involve your calves, which play a crucial role in maintaining blood flow from your legs back to the heart.

  • Reduce standing or sitting pressure: Blood naturally pools in your legs when you’re not moving, and sitting for long periods exaggerates the problem. Try tapping a foot, raising your legs, or taking a walk. If you’re standing still, sway from side to side if possible.

  • Watch your diet: Stay away from foods high in sodium since salt leads to fluid retention. Also reduce your intake of saturated fats, and include more oily fish.
