Ligation

A microsurgery technique in which a varicose vein is tied off with surgical suture. Ligation stops abnormal blood flow (venous reflux) into the varicose vein. It is performed through a single small incision under local anesthesia.

Ligation was a common treatment for varicose veins prior to Endo Venous Laser Therapy (EVLT), which has made ligation and surgical vein stripping essentially obsolete.
